Ben Spalding is a game design consultant and new media artist located in Durham, North Carolina. He uses systems (rules, algorithms, rituals) to explore alternative methods of storytelling and social play in interactive media. His previous work has covered such topics as augmented reality storytelling, multi-player narrative design, speculative software for critical reflection, and empathy and artificial intelligence. He creates games and software tools as part of his design practice.
Ben has an MFA in Digital Art and New Media from the University of California, Santa Cruz. His thesis project, Hydras Like Stories, examined multi-player narrative design principles for digital games through the production of a speculative software tool.
Ben also teaches creative coding and game design. The solutions to tomorrow's problems will require sociological and emotional literacy as much as technological proficiency, and he works to build classroom communities that empower students through creative code. He have previously taught a range of programs for middle school students through university undergraduates in Santa Cruz, CA and New York, NY.
